Donut Lab secures €25m and expands EV operations
The company also says that it strengthened its leadership team with serial tech investor Risto Siilasmaa joining the Board of Directors. Siilasmaa is known for his tenure as Nokia Chairman and as founder of cybersecurity firms WithSecure and F-Secure. New senior hires also include Neil Patterson as Vice President of Engineering Programmes, formerly with McLaren, Lotus and Aston Martin, and Craig Williams as Vice President of Business Development, previously at BMW and Rivian.
Donut Lab has established an R&D facility in Chippenham, Kent, complementing its teams in Helsinki and Tallinn to advance its full stack motor systems, described as the world’s lightest and most efficient. Volume manufacturing is underway, with applications spanning automotive, marine, aerospace, robotics and defence – from scooters and drones to heavy-duty trucks.
The Donut Platform integrates motors, battery modules, computer units and control software in a modular architecture designed to deliver high efficiency and performance. At the CES in Las Vegas in January, the Finnish startup presented a particularly powerful family of electric drives, all of which are wheel hub motors. The variant intended for cars can deliver 630 kW, making the electric motor extremely powerful.
The company says that following the event in Las Vegas, demand rose thirty-fold, leading to contracts with OEMs across land, sea and air sectors. The company will return to CES in January 2026 with a flagship showcase of its EV applications and partnerships.
“The continued growth in demand, international expansion and interest in our business demonstrates what we founders have always believed – that our tech solution is truly groundbreaking,” said CEO Marko Lehtimaki. “The performance, robustness, versatility and relatively low cost of entry of our products really is a winning formula. I cannot wait to showcase the latest applications and introduce new partners in the coming months.”
