Lucid drives over 1,200 km across the Alps without charging

Lucid claims to be the new holder of the Guinness World Record for the longest journey by an electric car without stopping to charge. The Air Grand Touring covered 1,205 kilometres at the weekend, replacing the previous Mercedes EQS 450. However, there was a lot of downhill driving.

Lucid reports that the 1,205-kilometre record drive with the Air Grand Touring took place between St. Moritz and Munich and covered Alpine passes, motorways and country roads. The previous record holder was the Mercedes EQS 450 with 1,045 kilometres. The electric Mercedes set this record in Japan in June. The Lucid has now gone a whopping 160 kilometres further. However, it should be mentioned that the route between Switzerland and Germany was very downhill: St. Moritz is 1,800 metres above sea level, while Munich is 500 metres above. In between, the Lucid Air mastered several climbs and descents.

Marketing campaign or not – Eric Bach, Senior Vice President of Product and Chief Engineer at Lucid, describes the range record as “yet another clear demonstration of the technological edge that defines Lucid.” The 611 kW Lucid Air Grand Touring used for the journey already has a range of 960 kilometres, even according to the WLTP cycle. A 113 kWh battery is fitted ex works in this variant. The electric vehicle bridged the difference to the record journey now achieved, thanks to the energy recovered by recuperation on downhill runs, among other things.

Eric Bach further elaborated: “Our Lucid products combine world class vehicle efficiency with the most advanced drive units, ultra-high voltage architecture, and battery management technology available today, which lets a Lucid travel further with less energy than any other vehicles.”

Umit Sabanci, who drove the vehicle, also had something to say: “When I completed the nine-country journey in 2024, it was just the beginning. This new achievement takes that journey even further. I’m proud to be part of a movement that proves electric mobility isn’t just the future; it’s already redefining what’s possible today.”
