New York releases millions in funding for EV & grid projects

The state of New York has awarded $3million to three projects focused on improving integration between EVs and the energy grid. An additional $4 million has been made available to projects which help to tackle issues faced by utilities companies, such as data collection, transmission, and operational challenges.

Recipients of the $3 million include lamppost charging firm Voltpost; The Mobility House; plus Weave Grid Inc. Voltpost received $775,000 to deploy a minimum of ten additional Level 2 charging stations in New York State with a focus on ‘UL certification’ and ‘retrofits’. The Mobility House, which offers vehicle-to-grid (V2G) integration services as well as charging management platforms and infrastructure, has meanwhile received $876,000.

This will be used on a utility distribution capacity project to support charging of electric school buses, as well as piloting a method for fast charger deployment which separates charger construction from grid development timelines. Finally, Weave Grid received the largest amount of funding, namely $1 million on a software project that aims to manage EV charging schedules in order to balance the grid load.

All of this funding has been awarded through the Vehicle Grid Integration Program, which focuses specifically on EV charging infrastructure projects. But another initiative, the Electric Vehicle Managed Charging Program, has also launched a $4m funding programme for teams that can tackle data collection data transmission and operational issues that utilities face when integrating EVs with the grid.

The Program has stated that proposals “must include behind-the-meter EV integrated solutions including the transfer of bi-directional data and utility control over charging, or both”. Applications are currently open until July 15th, with awards being made on a first-come, first-served basis.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said of the funding programmes: “New York is leading the way for in building a smarter, more sustainable energy future. By investing in innovative technologies that support EV charging and integration with the grid, we are strengthening our clean energy infrastructure to meet the demands of tomorrow. We are also improving grid resiliency while making it easier and more affordable for New Yorkers to drive electric.”
