Tesla lowers prices for the Model Y in Canada
In the Canadian Tesla configurator, the Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive is now listed again for CAD 64,990, the equivalent of around €40,600. Tesla had raised the price to 84,990 CAD (around 53,100 euros) in April after the car tariffs came into force. With the current price reduction of 20,000 Canadian dollars, the Model Y now costs as much there as it did before the tariffs.
The portal Drive Tesla Canada suspects that the price reduction was made possible by a major decision in the background: Tesla is no longer to import the Model Y for Canada from a US factory (Fremont or Austin), but from Giga Berlin in Grünheide. There are several indications of this, as only the prices for the Model Y were reduced, while all other Tesla series from US production are still subject to customs surcharges.
The delivery window forecast by Tesla could also speak in favour of an import from Germany: A Model Y ordered in Canada today is expected to be delivered in September or October of this year, according to the Tesla configurator. “an unusually long period compared to typical delivery windows from when vehicles are produced in the U.S.,” writes Drive Tesla Canada. Incidentally, the Model Y is now also available in Canada in the ‘Diamond Black’ paint finish – a colour that is also used in the German Tesla factory.
In addition to the USA and Germany, Tesla could theoretically also build the Model Y for Canada from Giga Shanghai in China. In practice, however, this is very unlikely, as the Canadian government introduced tariffs of 100 per cent on electric cars of Chinese origin last year. A more favourable import of the vehicle currently only appears to be possible from Germany.
Incidentally, Tesla Canada has been exonerated of the fraud allegations that surfaced earlier this year: Transport Canada has completed its investigation and found no evidence of fraud. Shortly after the agency announced in January that the ‘iZEV’ grant budget was nearly depleted, four Tesla shops reported over 8,000 deliveries in just one weekend, submitting claims for $43.2 million CAD, or more than half of the remaining available budget. These sudden and conspicuously high deliveries had aroused suspicion, and Tesla explained the mass of applications with delivery backlogs, which were accelerated in order to grant customers the funding before the end of the programme. Transport Canada’s investigation has now also confirmed that the applications complied with the programme guidelines and that the vehicles were eligible.
