Vingroup brands agree cooperation with MERALCO in Philippines

The Vingroup brands V-Green and Green GSM Philippines have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with MERALCO, the Philippine's largest power distribution company. It will see the three parties research and implement solutions for EV adoption, including electric taxi services and public charging networks.

The agreement will see the three organisations examine potential locations for charging stations and taxi hubs, ‘support’ the roll-out of new charging networks, and examine other means of scaling up EV adoption in urban areas. This includes Metro Manila as well as other cities. The Memorandum of Understanding also includes provisions for other areas of cooperation, such as co-development of solar arrays for EV charging stations, workforce training, and technical expertise.

V-Green is a Philippines-based EV charging network which is the exclusive charging partner for VinFast EVs in Vietnam. By March of this year, it had built more than 150,000 charging points across Vietnam, and continues to expand. For example, earlier this month, V-Green opened Hanoi’s largest fast-charging station featuring 42 units of 120kW DC chargers, which could indicate the kinds of capabilities it hopes to build into charging stations in the Philippines. Green GSM, on the other hand, provides an EV ride-hailing service using VinFast vehicles. It launched last month and, like V-Green, sits under Vingroup. The hope is that by partnering up with MERALCO, the companies will find it easier to drive the electrification of mobility across the Philippines.

Nguyen Thanh Duong, CEO of V-Green, said: “We believe this partnership between V-Green, MERALCO, and Green GSM will create meaningful and positive change in the Philippines’ urban transportation landscape. Expanding a comprehensive charging network powered by renewable energy will not only accelerate the green transition but also improve quality of life for Filipino citizens.”

Meanwhile, Manuel V Pangilinan, CEO of MERALCO, added: “This partnership brings together our collective strength in infrastructure, technology, and experience that will redefine our cities and our communities. Together, we intend to reframe the way we think about energy, transport and sustainability.”
