Tesla reveals Model 3+ with a range of 830 kilometres for China

Two new Tesla variants are about to be approved in China, which are set to feature rather exceptional battery range. The Model 3+ is expected to have a range of up to 830 kilometres, while the Model Y L with six seats has a range of 751 kilometres. (UPDATE BELOW)

Tesla has registered two new variants of its two mid-range bestsellers in China. These are the longest-range variants of the Model 3 to date, which should be able to travel 830 kilometres according to the local CLTC standard, and the six-seater L version of the Model Y. The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) recently published images and technical specifications of a number of new NEVs. These included the two upcoming Tesla versions.

The LG-supplied NMC battery has a capacity of 78.4 kWh, making it the largest ever installed in the sedan, which has been on sale since 2017. It weighs 448 kilos and therefore has an energy density of 175 Wh/kg. In total, the sedan with the large battery weighs 1,760 kilos.

As previously mentioned, the Model 3+ should offer a range of 800 to 830 kilometres according to the CLTC standard. The longest-range version of the series to date, the Model 3 AWD Long Range, has a range of 753 kilometres in China, so the increase in range is considerable. The drive is provided by an electric motor located on the rear axle, which delivers 225 kW and is therefore 31 kW more powerful than the unit in the entry-level version.

Tesla is also using an NMC battery with LG cells for the new Model Y L. However, the energy content is slightly higher at 82 kWh. The MIIT puts the range at a maximum of 751 kilometres. The battery is said to weigh 465 kilos and thus has an energy density of 176 Wh/kg.

Tesla relies on a dual motor layout for the 2,088-kilogram SUV. The drive unit on the front axle delivers 142 kW, while the rear motor provides 198 kW. The Model Y L with six seats is 4.98 metres long, 1.92 metres wide, 1.67 metres tall and has a wheelbase of 3.04 metres. The vehicle is therefore the same width as the Model Y Juniper presented in January, but 18 centimetres longer, has 15 centimetres more wheelbase and is five centimetres higher. The Model Y L is due to be launched on the market in the People’s Republic in autumn. The manufacturer has not yet published prices.

Update 12 August 2025

Tesla is now officially launching its new Model 3 variant with a CLTC range of 830 kilometres in China. Prices start at 269,500 yuan (approx. 32,200 euros). That is 34,000 yuan (4,000 euros) more than the base price of 235,500 yuan (28,000 euros) for the entry-level variant of the Model 3 in China.

Orders have officially been opened on Tesla’s online store, and deliveries are expected to begin in September. Tesla further writes that it has also updated the Model 3 Performance all-wheel-drive variant. Its CLTC range is now 647 km, up from 623 km; however, the price remains unchanged.

Update 19 August 2025

Tesla has now started pre-sales of the Model Y L in China and, in this context, released official images of the six-seat long version. With the vehicle extended by 18 centimetres compared to the standard Model Y, the roofline had to be adjusted. Combined with an optimised rear spoiler, this is said to have improved aerodynamics.

Inside, the Model Y L features a new 16-inch touchscreen, a more powerful wireless charging pad, an upgraded sound system with additional speakers, and USB-C ports for every seat. The technical specifications match those previously published by the MIIT.

Prices for the mid-size SUV with a third row of seats start at 339,000 yuan, the equivalent of around €40,300. Deliveries to customers in China are scheduled to begin in September.
