LGES orders lithium from the USA

South Korean battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution has signed its first offtake agreement with a US-based lithium supplier. The agreement with Compass Minerals, which is still non-binding, provides for LGES to be supplied with lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide from 2025.

LG Energy Solution has announced the construction of a new production line at its Ochang plant in South Korea for 4680 round cells. The line is expected to have an annual production capacity of 9 GWh – and apparently produce cells for Tesla.

NHTSA investigates LG ES battery recalls

The US Federal Highway and Vehicle Safety Administration is moving to investigate LG Energy Solution’s faulty battery cells that led to fires in electric cars and plug-in hybrids. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wants to ensure that all defective batteries have been recalled by car manufacturers.

LGES to build battery plant in Arizona

LG Energy Solution (LGES) has announced another battery factory in North America. The production facility for the manufacture of cylindrical battery cells for use in electric vehicles is to be built in Queen Creek in the US state of Arizona. LG is investing 1.7 trillion won (about 1.3 billion euros) for it.

Stellantis and LG Energy Solution have unveiled plans to build a large electric vehicle battery manufacturing facility in Canada. A joint venture is to be set up to produce battery cells and modules at the new factory in Windsor in the Canadian province of Ontario.

LG Energy Solution has concluded a binding long-term purchase agreement with Australian Mines for nickel and cobalt. The battery manufacturer thus secures access to 71,000 tonnes of nickel and 7,000 tonnes of cobalt for six years from the end of 2024.

LG Chem is aiming to invest 6 trillion won (4.4 billion euros or 5.2 billion dollars) in the expansion of its battery materials business for electric cars by 2025.
