Toyota joins “TOKYO H2” project with fuel cell Crown taxis

Toyota has joined “TOKYO H2,” a new hydrogen project launched by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. The initiative introduces Toyota’s Crown fuel cell saloon into the taxi fleet and aims to accelerate hydrogen adoption across Tokyo’s mobility sector.

The city plans to deploy around 600 fuel cell taxis by fiscal year 2030. As part of the first phase, Toyota will deliver 200 Crown fuel cell taxis by fiscal year 2025.

The project is led by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and supported by private-sector partners. The programme focuses on commercial mobility applications such as taxis and trucks, and has introduced a unified project logo to raise awareness across the city. The government and its partners plan to expand initiatives in stages to extend hydrogen use to other transport and industrial applications.

“By introducing the Crown to the fuel cell taxi fleet, Toyota aims to make the hydrogen society more familiar and accessible in everyday life,” the company said. It added that “by generating substantial hydrogen demand, Toyota seeks to create a virtuous cycle across the supply chain.”

To mark the project’s launch, Toyota reopened its renovated Mirai showroom in Minato City. Originally established in 2015 as an information centre on fuel cell vehicles and hydrogen, it has now been relaunched as the “TOKYO H2 HUB.” Toyota says the site will serve as a base for collaboration among companies and organisations working on hydrogen technologies and contribute to the spread of hydrogen in Tokyo.

Toyota regards hydrogen as a key energy source in its long-term strategy. The company said it is working “together with many partners” to expand its use across the entire value chain, including production, transport, storage and use. The Japanese carmaker confirmed it will “accelerate efforts to expand the use of hydrogen and contribute to the realisation of a hydrogen society.”
