HHLA subsidiary Metrans adds six Volvo electric trucks to fleet in Prague

The Czech transport company Metrans, which belongs to Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), has taken delivery of six electric tractor units from Volvo Trucks. They will primarily be used for first and last mile deliveries in urban and suburban traffic.

The model delivered is Volvo Trucks’ FH Electric, one of three heavy-duty electric truck models that Volvo has been selling and manufacturing in series since 2022. If you look even closer at the press photos, you will see that it is the FH Aero Electric, which was introduced in 2024 and features an aerodynamic kit with a cab front that has been moved forward by 24 centimetres and a camera system instead of conventional exterior mirrors.

Depending on the configuration, the FH Aero Electric has a battery capacity of 360 to 540 kWh, a drive system of 330 to 490 kW and a range of up to 300 kilometres. Next year, a long-distance version with a range of up to 600 km is also set to hit the market, which will then compete with models such as the MAN eTGX and the Mercedes-Benz eActros 600.

But back to Metrans and its plans for the six new electric trucks: the company intends to use them primarily for inner-city and suburban transport on the first and last mile. By using these vehicles, Metrans aims to reduce CO2 emissions and improve air quality in densely populated regions in the long term. At the same time, Metrans is also contributing to the HHLA Group’s sustainability goal of achieving climate-neutral production by 2040.

Peter Kiss, CEO of Metrans, says of the new vehicles in the fleet: “Electric trucks are an important investment in our future. They represent not only cutting-edge technology, but also our strong commitment to customers and society as a whole. We want to demonstrate that business and ecology can go hand in hand.”

John Muldoon, Director of Volvo Group Czechia, added: “Volvo Trucks greatly appreciates being a partner to METRANS on the road to a sustainable future in transport and logistics. The Volvo FH Electric is a powerful, zero-emission truck that meets the demands of today’s modern logistics without compromise.”

Metrans is primarily known in Germany as a rail transport company, but it is also active in multimodal logistics: it loads shipping containers onto its trains at ports and transports them by rail as close as possible to their final destination. According to the company, trucks are used exclusively to transport the containers the last few kilometres from a freight centre to the customer and back. And the new Volvo FH Electric trucks are now apparently also to be used for such routes.
