Skoda Vision O: Skoda’s take on the electric Octavia

With the Epiq, Skoda used the IAA to preview its upcoming compact electric SUV. But the Czech VW brand is also looking further ahead, unveiling the Vision O estate concept – a model that could eventually reach the market as an all-electric Octavia, likely with 800-volt technology.

While the Epiq still closely follows Skoda’s current “Modern Solid” design language – also seen on the Elroq and the updated Enyaq – the Vision O “represents a bold leap forward in the evolution of Skoda’s Modern Solid design language.”

Skoda says it developed the Vision O from the inside out, using a “customer-focused” approach. Whereas the brand’s MEB-based models featured a more conservative interior compared to some VW counterparts – such as no freestanding cockpit display, a gear selector in the centre console rather than on the steering column or integrated into the display – this new approach has led to a completely rethought cabin. According to Skoda’s German press release, it “features a minimalist design that emphasises maximum practicality, simplicity and spaciousness, with more than 650 litres of boot capacity.”

Key elements include a customisable Horizon Display for both driver and passenger, the enhanced AI assistant Laura and the new “Bio-Adaptive Lighting,” which automatically adjusts interior lighting to natural light cycles to create a pleasant atmosphere. Typical Skoda “Simply Clever” details include a portable speaker and a fully integrated coolbox.

The Vision O’s exterior is defined by clear, simple lines. Its minimalist design supports maximum efficiency through optimised aerodynamics, enabling longer range – even on extended journeys, Skoda stresses. The front “Tech Deck” has been replaced by a newly designed “Tech Loop.” Overall, the exterior is deliberately minimalist, with sharp, distinctive lines.

The Vision O measures 4.85 metres in length, 1.90 metres in width and 1.50 metres in height. “The aerodynamic design of the concept vehicle is optimised for maximum efficiency. The front of the vehicle features louvres that act as an active shutter, while channels along the sides direct excess air towards the wheels,” Skoda explains. “The wheel design is fully aerodynamically optimised to enhance dynamic driving performance.” Flush door handles also contribute to improved airflow.

At the rear, the Vision O adopts the Epiq’s new T-shaped light signature. The large boot can grow to 1,700 litres with the rear seats folded flat. Skoda, however, did not provide details at the premiere about towing capacity or roof load.

The Vision O focuses primarily on design, driver assistance and AI functions rather than powertrain details. Skoda offers only one key technical hint: “The series production of the Vision O, which will be based on a future Volkswagen Group platform, is planned for the next decade.”

That “future Volkswagen Group platform” is the SSP, meaning the electric Octavia will sit on VW’s Scalable Systems Platform. Using the updated MEB+ had also been considered – it would have been the safer choice with a proven 400-volt base – but the technology risked becoming outdated over a longer lifecycle. SSP, with its 800-volt architecture, represents the more forward-looking option, though the introduction of a new platform carries the risk of delays. Market launch is now expected in 2027 or 2028 – two years later than originally planned. Skoda brand CEO Klaus Zellmer had already confirmed this delay last October.

“At Skoda, our commitment to our customers, who have trusted us as the estate segment leader since 2016, drives us to realise the Vision O: a blend of innovative design, over 650 litres of boot space, autonomous driving functions and an intuitive AI assistant,” Zellmer says of the concept. “This vehicle transforms every journey into an effortless, enriching experience. At the same time, it brings us closer to our sustainability goals and elevates our Modern Solid design principles to a new level.”
