Italdesign showcases electric SUV “hologram”
As it is only a digital concept at this stage, there’s no word on whether this EVX will ever reach production. However, it’s intended to probe the design flexibility of the MEB+ electric platform and examine how far the platform can be stretched beyond existing production models in terms of body style and proportions.
And it certainly does stretch the platform. Italdesign’s concept illustrates a three-door, 2 + 2 coupe clocking in at 4.23m long, 1.82m wide and 1.49m high with a 2.6m wheelbase. Current production models adopting the MEB+ platform include the ID. Polo, Cupra Raval, ID. Cross, and Skoda Epiq – all considered “small cars”. The first of this group to reach near-series production, the Raval, is only slightly smaller than the EVX concept, with dimensions of 4.05m x 1.78m x 1.52m. Where the EVX concept differs is in its longer length and sportier silhouette than the other MEB+ small cars, coupe design, and the aforementioned 2+ 2 seating layout.

While Italdesign’s concept is not meant for production, the design agency did produce preliminary feasibility work confirming that the proportions could be translated into production vehicles. This would align with VW’s broader rollout plans for the MEB+ platform. The updated platform should support significantly longer ranges with up towards 700km in some configurations, with VW also targeting faster 175-200kW charging power. (The MEB model with the highest WLTP range to date is the ID. Aero, which reaches 620 kilometres.)
With the German automaker planning to launch ten new MEB models by 2026, and ultimately produce up to 10 million EVs using the MEB and MEB+ models, concepts like this could have a significant impact in the long-term rollout of the platform.
