Mercedes & Athos Silicon announce partnership
The two companies announced a reference design collaboration with Athos Silicon. Athos Silicone is a specialised semiconductor company established by former engineers from Mercedes. Specifically, the partners aim to accelerate “the adoption and scaling of advanced chiplet architecture originally researched at MBRDNA while supporting next-generation autonomous driving platforms across the industry.”
Automotive applications will not be the extent of the technology research that the partners are envisioning: In its press release, Athos Silicon writes that it plans to “extend mSoC (Multiple Systems on Chip) beyond automotive into broader autonomy applications like robotics, drones and aerospace.”
“Mercedes-Benz continuously explores technologies that can advance safety, performance and automated driving. Open chiplet approaches—such as UCIe™—show promise for future high-performance compute architectures,” said Markus Schäfer, Chief Technology Officer, adding: “Athos Silicon, an independent company with roots in research initiated at Mercedes-Benz in 2020, will pursue its own path to develop these ideas for broader industry use.”
