VW ID.4 and ID.5 now qualify for UK EV grant

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) has just announced that two Volkswagen models will now qualify for the Electric Car Grant (ECG) scheme: the VW ID.4 and ID.5. It brings the total number of qualifying EVs up to 40.

It means that people who purchase the ID.4 or ID.5 will receive a discount of £1,500 on certain variants, namely the Pure Essential, Pure Match and Pro Essential. These can be purchased with the grant either in a single-motor or dual-motor powertrain arrangement and with either a 52kWh (221 miles range) or a 77kWh battery (339 miles range). It means that prices now start from £35,495 for the Pure Essential variant, down from the previous £36,995 OTR price. The discount will be applied at the point of purchase with no need for customers to fill in paperwork.

This £1,500 is in the lower band of the ECG – the other, higher band delivers a grant of £3,750 based on vehicle efficiency and “green” credentials. The criteria includes a minimum battery range of 100 miles, a three-year or 60,000-mile warranty, and a battery warranty of either eight years or 100,000 miles. With the addition of the ID.4 and ID.5 to the lower band, it means Volkswagen now has three eligible EVs on the ECG list – the third being its ID.3 hatchback, which now has a starting price of £29,360 as a result.

Last month, the UK hit a new EV registration record thanks partly to an expansion of the Electric Car Grant. September saw a 29.1 per cent year-on-year increase in passenger EV registrations, which totalled 72,779. Meanwhile, diesel model registrations dropped by 28.2 per cent while petrol vehicles grew by only 2.4 per cent.

Keir Mather, the under-secretary of state for DfT and the portfolio holder for EVs and decarbonisation, told Autocar that 20,000 of last month’s EV sales were ECG-subsidised, saying: “With 38 models to choose from, more drivers than ever are making the switch, saving money and cutting running costs whilst supporting British jobs and boosting the economy. Combined with record-setting action on charge points – which have hit over 83,000 across the country and 100,000 more on the way – it’s never been easier or smarter to go electric.”
