Skoda Group receives order for 16 trolleybuses from Ostrava

The Skoda Group has signed a framework agreement with public transport company Dopravní podnik Ostrava for the delivery of up to 16 battery-powered trolleybuses. Fourteen of these vehicles have been firmly ordered, with two further vehicles forming part of an option. Delivery of the buses to the Czech city is scheduled to begin in 2027.

The contract for the Czech city of Ostrava, worth 268 million Czech koruna (approx. 11.02 million euros), is for twelve-metre-long models of the Skoda 26Tr. With the traction batteries installed, they should be able to cover at least 15 kilometres purely on electric power in areas without overhead lines. However, no further details about the electric drive system are given. Instead, the many comfort and safety features are highlighted.

‘Ostrava has long been one of the most progressive cities in the field of public transport, and we greatly appreciate the continuation of our cooperation. The new 26Tr battery-powered trolleybuses will offer both transport operators and passengers greater flexibility, comfort and operational efficiency,’ says Karel Majer, CEO of Skoda Electric. Daniel Morys, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of DPO, adds: ‘The new trolleybuses will also be equipped with air conditioning throughout the vehicle and a camera system, including a collision camera. In this way, we want to ensure maximum comfort and safety for passengers.’

The transport company Dopravní podnik Ostrava (DPO) already operates 75 trolleybuses, including 58 vehicles from Skoda (23 of the 26Tr model, 17 more 27Tr and 18 Skoda 36Tr). They operate on the twelve-line trolleybus network, which connects central transfer points such as the main railway station, the Miloš Sýkora Bridge and the Hranečník terminal. Delivery of the newly ordered buses is scheduled to begin in 2027, and they will also be used on the existing network.

In addition to Ostrava, the Skoda Group has received numerous other orders for trolleybuses from cities in Czechia in recent months. For example, a framework agreement was signed for the delivery of up to 20 type 32Tr trolleybuses for Jihlava, and the company is to supply up to eight type 33Tr battery-powered articulated buses to the Czech cities of Chomutov and Jirkov. The Skoda Group has also signed contracts for the delivery of up to 31 battery trolleybuses of the 32Tr and 33Tr models for Hradec Králové and a framework agreement for the city of Zlín for up to 60 trolleybuses. The manufacturer describes the two major orders from Esslingen (Germany) for 58 trolleybuses – in March, the figure was still 52 trolleybuses – and 40 trolleybuses for the city of Tallinn (Estonia) as international successes. In August, 30 additional trolleybuses were ordered for the Estonian city. However, there is no mention of this in the current announcement.
