The first two of five electric freight charging hubs begin construction in the UK
The Gridserve Electric Freightway is a programme designed to give fleet operators across the UK access to charging for heavy-duty road transport. The program is partially funded through the UK Government’s Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK. Of the first two truck charging hubs, one is located at Extra Baldock to service fleets moving between London, the Midlands and the North, and the other is located at Moto Exeter to serve the South West freight corridor, including Devon and Cornwall.
Each truck charging hub along the Electric Freightway is being designed for between four to eight ultra-rapid charging bays. These will allow for articulated lorries and trailers to charge easily without repositioning or reversing, with layouts to suit commercial vehicles, including elements such as elevated screens and connectors for higher driving positions. Each of the facilities will include security measures such as lighting, sensors, walkways and CCTV (video surveillance).
Gridserve says the charging hubs mark “a major milestone in the country’s transition to cleaner road freight,” as the first publicly accessible electric freight charging hubs. In June 2025, Nissan opened an electric truck charging hub in Sunderland, said to be the first on-site private shared charging station of its kind, which was also installed by Gridserve.
Gridserve was founded in 2017 to develop, own and operate critical infrastructure for sustainable energy production. The infrastructure provider opened the UK’s first all-electric car charging forecourt in 2020, with the second opening in 2022.
Daniel Kunkel, Gridserve CEO, told Fleet News: “Our depot charging rollout has already helped to support over a half a million zero-emission miles in the UK and, as we start construction of our public eHGV hubs, we begin to realise our vision for a national network that will support the electrification of long-haul, heavy-duty freight.”
