Pilot trials of the electric taxi scheme have already begun, and are backed by an investment of $50 million from One Car Now, a Mexican car rental company. The initiative is set to coincide with the 2026 World Cup, which will see a number of matches hosted in the state’s capital of Monterrey. As such, it aims to guarantee services in the Monterrey metropolitan area as well as Monterrey International Airport and key industrial zones.

At a presentation hosted at BYD’s facility in Gonzalitos, stakeholders including execs from BYD and One Car Now plus state and municipal officials shared their plans for the scheme. The BYD Dolphin Surf EV, which is known as the Surf Mini in Latin America, will be the vehicle primarily used for e-taxis.

No specifics were provided on the trim or model year, but those at the presentation stated the Mini will offer up to 400km of range on a single charge. Mairon Sandoval, director at One Car Now, said: “These vehicles are not just electric cars – they are tools for thousands of families.”

As part of the World Cup preparations, the e-taxis will be fitted with translation systems so that drivers can communicate with non-Spanish speaking tourists during match fixtures. The e-taxis will also be able to operate on ridesharing platforms DiDi and Uber, thanks to their partnerships with BYD Mexico.

Jorge Vallejo, President of BYD Mexico, said the scheme will ensure drivers on the program can access EVs affordably: “We are democratising electric mobility in Mexico. Drivers will have access to vehicles with the lowest down payments in the market, with insurance and maintenance included. That is fair, clean and sustainable mobility.
