Rohrdorfer launches cement deliveries in Upper Austria with electric trucks

Austrian building materials manufacturer Rohrdorfer is adding three electric semi-trailer trucks to its fleet in Gmunden. Three eActros 600 trucks from Mercedes-Benz Trucks will be used to deliver cement from Rohrdorfer's plant in Upper Austria.

Rohrdorfer produces building materials for regional demand at over 150 locations in Germany, Austria, Italy and Hungary, including cement, ready-mixed concrete, precast elements, concrete products, sand and gravel. For the first time, three electric trucks will be used to transport goods from its plant in Gmunden. Two vehicles have already been added to the fleet, with the last due to arrive by the end of the year. The project is being implemented in cooperation with the logistics company Poll-Nussbaumer, also based in Gmunden.

The new Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 trucks have a continuous output of up to 400 kW and a peak output of 600 kW, with a range of up to 500 kilometres. Rohrdorfer expects deliveries to be just as fast and smooth as before with combustion engine trucks. Plus: “Compared to diesel, the eActros 600 reduces the noise level by around 10 decibels, which is perceived as halving the volume. This benefits not only residents living along the transport routes, but also the drivers.”

The three electric tractor units pull the silo trailers commonly used in cement transport. The electric trucks are charged exclusively on the Poll-Nussbaumer premises in Gmunden, and they are powered by 100 per cent green electricity. Since 2017, the transport company has been generating its own electricity on site via a photovoltaic system. “The new electric trucks are therefore climate-neutral,” emphasise the partners.

“Respectful treatment of the environment is very important to our company,” emphasises managing partner Manfred Nussbaumer. “That’s why we already handle a considerable portion of our transport volume using combined transport. The purchase of electric trucks for use at Rohrdorfer is another step towards environmentally friendly transport.”

Herbert Humps, sales manager and authorised signatory at Rohrdorfer Zement GmbH in Gmunden, added: “The partnership with Poll-Nussbaumer is an important step for us in implementing climate protection along the entire value chain. By reducing CO2 emissions for both our products and our own operations, we are also supporting our customers in initiating the urgently needed changes.”

Rohrdorfer Zement GmbH is taking action against its CO2 emissions on several levels. The vehicle fleet is just one starting point. The company considers its CO2-reduced cements to be an even more important lever. Rohrdorfer currently offers three such cements, including the ‘Eco Fusion’ variety, which is said to reduce CO2 emissions by 50 per cent compared to the reference year 1990. “Eco Fusion is already in high demand because it can be used to produce concrete with significantly reduced CO2 emissions, as required for public sector construction projects,” the Austrian company wrote.

Before the arrival of the first three electric trucks, Rohrdorfer had already gained experience with e-mobility in areas of the company that were ‘easier’ to electrify. For example, the company has been using electric company cars and electric forklifts in its warehouses for some time.
