GM starts production of the new Chevrolet Bolt

After several years on pause, a new Chevy Bolt is set to return to the US market next year. General Motors has now begun production of the electric model in Kansas. Compared with the first generation, it brings several technical changes.

This is not according to a company announcement but a report by GM Authority, a portal specialising in the manufacturer’s vehicles. A Chevrolet spokesperson confirmed to the trade outlet that production began on 10 November at the Fairfax plant in the US state of Kansas. The first units are expected to reach Chevrolet dealers in January 2026.

As is customary in the US market, the model will be offered as a 2027 model year, even though sales in this form will already start in 2026. GM presented the key data for the second Bolt generation at a customer event in October: the range stands at 255 miles, or around 410 kilometres, only slightly above the first generation, but rapid-charging power is set to increase significantly to 150 kW.

This is because the Bolt (and the discontinued sister model, the Bolt EUV) are no longer stand-alone vehicles in the GM portfolio but share their technology with the Chevrolet Equinox EV. This includes the 157 kW motor and the 65 kWh battery in the vehicle floor.

And the price will fall, as GM uses more robust and cheaper LFP cells in the new model’s battery. At market launch, the Bolt in LT trim with the “Comfort Package” will start at $29,990, currently about 25,850 euros. A more basic 1LT variant is set to follow later at $28,995, along with the sportier RS version at $32,995. According to GM Authority, the most expensive variant will be the RS model with the “Tech Package” and panoramic roof at $35,685.

Other optional features include the semi-autonomous “SuperCruise” driving system for more than $3,000. The options list also includes the “GM PowerUp 2 NACS Charger” for $899 – not an on-vehicle NACS charging option but a wallbox with a NACS cable. Alternatively, customers can order GM’s vehicle-to-home-capable “PowerShift” wallbox.

When GM discontinued the first-generation Bolt in 2023, the decision drew criticism, as the Bolt and Bolt EUV were among the most popular and affordable electric models in North America. With the second generation, GM is once again offering a more affordable electric car in the US – and the Bolt will be considerably cheaper than its technical sibling, the Equinox EV, which currently starts at 35,100 dollars.
