Watthub opeans Port of Rotterdam public charging station for heavy commercial vehicles
The newly-opened WattHub high-power charging hub is designed for all kinds of trucks and off-highway vehicles operating in and around Europe’s largest port. In the first phase of expansion, electric vehicles charging at the hub are offered 30 Kempower charging points, each with 400 kW, and five charging points with 250 kW. Virta charging and energy platform operates the site around the clock, utilising a reservation system with flexible tariffs.
The 5,000 square metre WattHub charging hub is situated on Maasvlakte Rotterdam, a massive industrial extension of the Europoort port and industrial facility within the Port of Rotterdam, built on land reclaimed from the North Sea.
Gerben van den Berg, CEO of WattHub, explained, “We see the Maasvlakte site as a major enabler for zero‑emission logistics and construction. It supports port drayage, urban logistics and nearby zero‑emission worksites, helping fleets comply with zero‑emission city‑logistics zones rolling out from 1 January 2025.”
Virta says the “flagship” public charging hub for heavy-duty commercial vehicles will play an important role in helping heavy‑duty fleets operating in and out of the Port of Rotterdam take the step to electrify their trucks. This is the second WattHub charging facility for heavy-duty electric vehicles in the Netherlands.
The first WattHub designed for electric trucks and off-highway vehicles was opened in October 2023 with TSG Netherlands, and is situated in the Dutch province of Gelderland, close to the border between the border with Germany. The two sites now cover a stretch servicing the freight gateway to much of Europe and the UK, to and from the rest of the world. Both sites are supplied exclusively with renewable energy.
