London DLR nearing full electrification of car and van fleet

KeolisAmey Docklands (KAD), the company that operates London's Docklands Light Railway (DLR), says it is now on track to completely electrify its car and van fleet by December 2025. It claims this is four years ahead of a previously agreed deadline.

KAD states that the electrification of its fleet is a condition of its new eight-year contract with Transport for London (TfL), which placed a five-year deadline for fleet electrification on the brand. However, KAD says it has now introduced EVs to 64% of its overall fleet, and is now on track to fully electrify the fleet by December of this year – four years ahead of schedule.

The old fleet was made up of a combination of petrol and diesel vehicles, but these are now being replaced with 39 electric vans and 6 electric cars. Notably, all of the new EVs in the KAD fleet come from a single manufacturer – in this case, Ford, which has provided a mixture of Puma Gen E cars, E-Tourneo minibuses, E-Transit and E-Transit Custom vans, plus a number of specialised variants including double cabs, dropsides, flatbeds and tail-lifts.

KAD says that using a single manufacturer has enabled it to use Ford’s Pro telematics system – providing real-time insights into driver behaviour, vehicle performance, energy use and more.

KAD has also partnered with DriveElectric, a UK-based firm that helps businesses fund, manage and optimise their EV fleets. KAD states that DriveElectric has supplied short-term rental EVs during a handover period, as well as provided support for charging infrastructure and energy planning at two ‘grid-constrained’ sites.

Adam Kemp, DriveElectric’s Sales Director, said: “This was a complex project, and finding the right product to meet demanding operational needs required real expertise. That’s where DriveElectric makes the difference. By partnering with Ford, we delivered the right solution and managed every stage of the transition with precision. The outcome is a fleet that keeps critical infrastructure moving, improves visibility through Ford Pro telematics, reduces downtime and supports the customer’s sustainability goals.”
