BYD to recall 90,000 plug-in hybrids in China
The defect in the plug-in hybrid sedans reportedly stems from production issues, according to the CN EV Post, which cites China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR). A software update is now expected to resolve the issue. This recall follows a recent one in October, when BYD recalled 115,783 battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
The rising number of such recalls highlights “increased scrutiny of its vehicle quality after years of rapid growth,” according to Chinese media. The current recall specifically affects two batches: 52,890 Qin Plus DM-i sedans manufactured between 26 September 2021 and 23 September 2023, and 36,091 vehicles produced between 7 January 2021 and 30 September 2022. In extreme cases, these models may fail to operate in pure electric driving mode.
In response, BYD has authorised its dealers to update the diagnostic software for affected vehicles via an over-the-air update. “When the software detects battery abnormalities, the dashboard panel will illuminate the battery fault indicator, prompting users to return to dealerships for free battery pack replacement,” the company stated.
