Volvo to deliver 73 new electric buses to Borås, Sweden

Volvo Buses has received an order from Vy Buss for 73 new electric buses, which will be deployed in the Swedish city of Borås and on regional routes around the city. Volvo Buses does not have to go far to deliver the units, as Borås is also the manufacturer's central production site.

The buses have been ordered by the public transit operator Vy Buss, which has purchased a range of Volvo buses, including 46 Volvo 7900 Electric articulated units, 14 Volvo 7900 Electric, and 13 Volvo 8900 Electric. All vehicles are expected to be delivered by April 2027. While the partners have not disclosed technical details about the ordered buses, it is clear that the vehicles will operate partly in urban traffic and partly on regional routes, including connections to Viared—the location of Volvo’s bus production plant.

That is also where the buses will be part-manufactured: the chassis is produced on-site, with bodywork supplied by Volvo partner MCV, which manufactures this in a facility outside Cairo, Egypt. That also applies to the buses ordered by Vy Buss. The decision to purchase was driven by confidence in Volvo Buses’ products and their long-term service commitment.

What it means for Borås is that all city bus traffic will be fully electrified, with Volvo Buses stating ‘greater comfort, increased seat capacity and improved accessibility’ to boot. Martin Spjern, Country Manager for Sweden at Volvo Buses, said: “Building on this strong local foundation, we and our dealer Boråsbil have together offered a comprehensive solution that includes service contracts and depot arrangements – ensuring reliability, uptime and long-term performance for the operator.”

Calling the order an ‘important step toward a more sustainable and climate-smart public transit system’, Vy Buss CEO Robert Nyberg said: “At Vy Buss, we are very pleased to have reached an agreement with Volvo Buses for the delivery of their electric buses for our upcoming transit contract in the city of Borås. This marks the beginning of a long-term, forward-looking partnership to develop public transportation in Borås together.”
