Tesla opens its third charging hub in India

Tesla has announced the opening of its third charging hub in India in Gurugram, Haryana, a satellite city of the national capital New Delhi. The move comes just weeks after the opening of India’s first all-in-one Tesla Centre in the city at the end of last month.

The company has opened the new charging hub in a surface car park at the DLF One Horizon Centre, a commercial building around 10 kilometres north-west of the all-in-one Tesla Centre. It has installed four V4 DC Superchargers that can charge at up to 250 kW and three AC Destination Chargers with a peak output of 11 kW. Charging costs 24 rupees (€0.23) per kWh via the Superchargers and 14 rupees (€0.13) per kWh via the Destination Chargers at the new facility.

Tesla sells only the Model Y in India and gives customers a choice of two variants: Standard Range RWD and Long Range RWD. The former’s battery pack supports charging at up to 175 kW, adding up to 238 kilometres of range in 15 minutes. The Long Range RWD variant can take full advantage of the V4 Supercharger, charging at up to 250 kW, sufficient to add 267 kilometres of range in 15 minutes.

When fully charged, the Model Y can cover up to 500 kilometres in the Standard Range RWD variant and 661 kilometres in the Long Range RWD variant. Tesla states both figures according to the WLTP, which typically produces more realistic values than India’s MIDC (Modified Indian Driving Cycle). The base variant takes 5.9 seconds to reach 100 km/h, while the top variant performs this marginally quicker in 5.6 seconds. Both versions share a top speed of 201 km/h.

While EV charging infrastructure in India is improving, reliability remains a challenge. Addressing this, Sharad Agarwal, Tesla’s Country Head in India, said the company’s charging hub in Gurugram will have a 99.95% uptime.

In addition to the new site in Gurugram, Tesla operates a charging hub in each of the other cities where it has opened a showroom and a service centre – New Delhi and Mumbai, Maharashtra. It plans to open a charging hub in Bengaluru, Karnataka, which is among India’s top cities for EV sales.
