MG kicks off deliveries of the MG4 with semi-solid-state battery

Chinese automotive group SAIC has begun deliveries of the 'Anxin Edition' of the new MG4. This model's standout feature: it is the first affordable electric car equipped with a semi-solid-state battery, also known as a semi-solid-state battery.

Although the ‘old’ MG4 Electric, which has proven particularly popular in Europe, has only been on the market since 2022, SAIC unveiled a completely new generation as early as March 2025. This early update was partly driven by the limited success of the MG4 and the MG Motor brand in China. The new MG4 EV is set to become the brand’s first ‘global’ model, targeting customer groups in China, other Asian markets, and Europe.

The new MG4 EV is not yet available in Europe—its launch is planned for next year. However, sales in China began in late summer. At the launch, there was a major surprise: the vehicle was not offered in the four variants initially announced, but in five. The fifth variant, called the ‘Anxin Edition,’ features a semi-solid-state battery supplied by the startup QingTao Energy, in which MG’s parent company SAIC invested years ago.

Such batteries, also known as semi-solid-state batteries, remain a rare feature in the market and are considered an intermediate step towards full solid-state batteries. They promise significant improvements in range, charging times, and safety compared to conventional batteries with liquid electrolytes.

So far, only competitor Nio, which produces significantly more premium and expensive electric vehicles than MG, has mass-produced semi-solid-state batteries, supplied by manufacturer WeLion. This makes the MG4 the first compact car for the mass market to incorporate this innovative battery technology.

MG has now begun deliveries of the MG4 ‘Anxin Edition’ with the semi-solid-state battery. In China, the vehicle is priced at around 100,000 yuan (approximately €12,000), while variants with conventional lithium-ion batteries start at around 70,000 yuan (approximately €8,500). It remains unclear whether the ‘Anxin Edition’ will be introduced in Europe. Additionally, Chinese price lists are not directly comparable to those in Germany. Due to export costs and high import duties, prices in Germany are significantly higher—the starting price for the ‘old’ MG4 Electric is currently €34,990.

Technical specifications: The manganese-based semi-solid-state battery contains 5 per cent less liquid electrolyte than conventional lithium batteries. The battery capacity is 53.95 kWh. Combined with a permanent magnet synchronous motor with a maximum output of 120 kW, the CLTC range is 530 km, with an energy consumption of 11.9 kWh per 100 km. Using 2C fast charging, the battery can be charged from 30 to 80 per cent in 21 minutes. The top speed is 160 km/h. The new generation is noticeably larger than its predecessor: the vehicle measures 4.40 metres in length, 1.84 metres in width, and 1.55 metres in height, with a wheelbase of 2.75 metres.
