Cabot’s specialist materials are set to improve the conductivity and efficiency of PowerCo’s batteries. However, the partners have not disclosed the scale of the agreement, leaving the order volume, financial details and contract duration unclear. The US company merely states that the deal represents ‘significant milestone in Cabot’s strategic growth in the battery materials market.’

It also remains unclear which vehicles will use batteries containing Cabot’s materials. The Boston-based company refers to next-generation electric vehicles. Jeff Zhu, Executive Vice President of Cabot, adds that his firm contributes to innovative solutions that meet the evolving demands of the electric vehicle market. This suggests the supply agreement likely relates to product launches in the coming years.

“This agreement positions us as one of the leading conductive materials suppliers in the European EV battery market,” emphasised Jeff Zhu. “Furthermore, it reflects the strength of our technology and our ability to scale production to meet growing global demand.” The conductive products PowerCo has ordered from Cabot are part of a broader portfolio of conductive additives and dispersions developed by the US company to enhance battery performance. Cabot’s customers include not only automotive manufacturers but also producers of stationary energy storage systems and consumer electronics.

PowerCo’s decision to select Cabot as a supplier is likely linked to the specialty chemicals firm’s presence in Germany since spring 2023. Since then, Cabot has operated a technology centre in Münster, focusing on technical collaboration with customers across the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa). Additionally, Cabot claims to already have production capacities for conductive carbon additives in Europe.

In 2023, Cabot announced that its presence in Germany would ‘continue to strengthen its technology engagements with other participants in the battery industry through enhanced collaboration and innovation with battery manufacturers, electric vehicle (EV) customers and partners.’ In other words, the Boston-based firm was actively seeking customers and collaboration partners. At the time, Cabot also joined the European Battery Alliance (EBA). With PowerCo, the company has now secured a major European battery player as a customer.
