Qwello wins charging tender in Copenhagen

German charging provider Qwello has announced its expansion into Denmark after the company secured two contracts as part of a public tender by the City of Copenhagen in 2025.

The contracts grant Qwello the right to install and operate up to 140 public AC charging stations across several districts of the Danish capital. One contract covers Stefansgade, Nørrebroparken, Lundtoftegade and Vesterbro Vest, while the second includes Bispebjerg, Gl. Sydhavn, Rosenvænget, and Svanemøllen Syd and Øst. “The contracts mark a key milestone in Qwello’s Northern European expansion and reinforce its role as a trusted partner for cities advancing sustainable mobility,” the Danish subsidiary of the German company states.

However, Copenhagen will not use the Qwello charging station with integrated charging cable familiar from some German cities, but rather the next-generation CP22 model, as the company has announced. “Designed specifically for dense urban environments, the CP22 enables the simultaneous charging of two vehicles while minimising space requirements and blending seamlessly into public streetscapes,” the company explains. Indeed, the charging station shown in the press photo features a sleek design, is significantly lower in height, and is finished in black. A seven-inch screen is integrated into the slanted top, while the two Type 2 connectors with status LEDs are located on the sides below. The base measures just 40 by 30 centimetres, ensuring the CP22 occupies little space even in densely populated areas.

The charging stations in Copenhagen will primarily be installed in residential areas and mixed-use districts, addressing what Qwello describes as ‘one of the key barriers to EV adoption’ – the ‘the lack of convenient charging options for drivers without private parking.’ While other operators increasingly focus on inner-city fast charging (for example, in supermarket car parks), Qwello aims to deploy numerous AC chargers close to residential areas.

“Entering Denmark and being selected by the City of Copenhagen is an important milestone for Qwello. Copenhagen sets some of the highest standards in Europe for sustainable urban mobility, and this project reflects our ability to meet those expectations — from operating on 100% green electricity to using low-emission equipment and service vehicles, and delivering a fast, reliable rollout at street level,” says Nils Gaedt, Managing Director of Qwello Denmark. “We are proud to support the city with charging infrastructure designed for everyday urban use and to strengthen our long-term commitment to the Nordic region.”

According to Qwello, the company operates over 16,000 charging points under public concessions with municipalities and through private investments – without subsidies. Qwello offers cities a turnkey charging solution by providing all elements of the charging infrastructure. To date, Qwello has been active in cities such as Frankfurt, Hamburg, Berlin, Stockholm, London, Paris and Madrid.
