ABB and Ampol roll out first 400 kW ultra-fast chargers in Australia

ABB has installed its first A400 ultra-fast EV chargers in Australia at Ampol’s Foodary Eastern Creek Westbound site on Sydney’s M4 Motorway. The 400 kW units form part of a ten-bay charging hub designed for electric trucks and large vehicles.

The chargers are positioned within a dedicated drive-through hub designed to accommodate electric trucks and larger electric vehicles towing trailers. According to the companies, the layout is intended to support commercial and long-distance users that require easy access to charging stations.

Moreover, the Eastern Creek site is the first in Australia to combine a 400 kW charger with ABB’s Energy Management capabilities. The system is supported by an on-site Terra Gateway Pro controller and ABB’s digital monitoring tools, enabling real-time oversight, remote configuration and intelligent control of the charging infrastructure. Advanced power-sharing algorithms dynamically distribute available electricity capacity across the chargers within grid constraints during periods of peak demand.

ABB also highlighted the introduction of a new user interface for the chargers, stating: “We are particularly excited to introduce a new generation in user experience, introducing an interface developed by engineers recruited from Android and Google to simplify the charging experience, and give operators the opportunity to share their brands’ messaging and targeted promotions.”

“We are thrilled to work with Ampol in this groundbreaking initiative. The A400 chargers represent the future of EV charging, particularly for heavy vehicles and for public charging in general,” said Sean Stove, ABB E-Mobility Division Manager for APAC. “By providing fast and reliable charging solutions, we are helping to support the electrification transition in the transport sector in Australia.”

Patrick Luxton, General Manager Energy Value Chain at Ampol, added: “The installation of ABB’s A400 chargers is a significant step forward in our commitment to powering better journeys for our customers.”

While this is great, they are already obsolete.New cars in China now do 1Kw+ charging...Australia always behind..

So you have to travel +1 Hour to save 10min of charging.

CCS2 charging speed 400 kW Chademo charging speed 0 kW - none provided. This could have been a great place to top up on my way from Sydney to home in the Blue Mountains. Regrettably my Leaf and I are among the Chademo users who are not welcome here.

CCS2 to CHAdeMO adapters are available for as little as around $800 these days.

Hi Alan, as an owner of an EV fast charger I can explain why no Chardemo connector are installed. For every kWh of charging we sell on the Chademo connector we have $6/kWh of costs. For every charge on the CCS2 we have about 45c/kWh of costs. It isn’t that the electrons are different, it’s because the additional cost of the infrastructure, insurance, network fees to cater to the few drivers that need a station with Chademo connectors. I suspect if we made Chademo charging $6.20/kWh so we maintained a 20c/kWh profit it would seem unfair to you as well.
