Believ charging points go live in Leeds
The first charge point has opened at a council-owned car park in the city centre, the Woodhouse Lane multi-storey facility, according to Leeds Times. It offers 150kW rapid charging, with pricing set at 79p p/kWh.
Believ is typically hardware-agnostic, offering a range of overnight street chargers from 7kW to 22kW. It also partners with manufacturers such as Wallbox to offer high-speed DC charging up to 220kW. No technical details on the other Leeds charging sites have been published, but Believ has stated that it will include a ‘mix of fast-chargers for long-stay and overnight charging and rapid chargers for quicker, on-the-go top-ups, installed at both on-street and off-street locations’. These will target ‘residential areas, community halls, sport centres, and key city centre sites’.
Believ CEO Guy Bartlett commented: “Our fully funded model allows local authorities to deliver high-quality, future-ready charging networks without the use of public funds. This project reflects our shared ambition to create cleaner air and more sustainable transport options for all.”
Cllr Mohammed Rafique, Leed City Council’s executive member for climate, added: “It’s an important step towards delivering a comprehensive EV charging network that meets the needs of our residents and visitors. By expanding access to convenient, reliable public charging, especially for those without driveways, we’re helping to make the transition to electric vehicles easier and more accessible for everyone.”
Believ itself was established as a joint venture in 2023 by Leeds City Council and Northern Powergrid, a regional power distributor. It aims to eventually deliver as many as 1000 new public charge points by 2027. The partnership with the council is being fully funded by Believ, which also has full responsibility for the charge points’ installation, operation, and maintenance. There’s no word yet on how long the rest of the roll-out will take, but Believ has said it will ‘continue throughout early 2026’.
