MG2 to be unveiled later this year

Initial rough details about the MG2 electric city car are emerging: Prices for the new entry-level model from SAIC's brand are expected to start at around £20,000 pounds—approximately €23,000 euros. The MG2 is set to be unveiled in the second half of 2026 but will not be available until 2027.

This insight comes from AutoExpress, citing David Allison, Head of Product and Planning at MG in the UK. It has long been established that the MG2 will join the brand’s electric vehicle lineup, which already includes seven model ranges, as its new entry-level model. Specifically, it will sit below the MG4 in the British-Chinese brand’s portfolio, taking on the role of the new base model.

Allison had already hinted in spring 2024 that the SAIC brand was exploring the launch of a compact electric vehicle. At the time, reports suggested that the MG2 would be an electric city car priced at around £20,000, with an expected launch as early as 2025. Later, however, rumours emerged that the price would start at £25,000, with a 2027 release date. Now, AutoExpress reports that the starting price is back to £20,000 (approximately €23,000) and, while the model will be unveiled in the second half of this year, it will only reach British dealerships in 2027.

According to earlier statements, the MG2 is not intended to disrupt the market on price but rather to offer a ‘strong value-for-money proposition’. Visually, AutoExpress suggests it will feature a distinctly British design. Technical details about the upcoming MG compact electric vehicle remain scarce. However, the British portal speculates that the electric MG city car will likely utilise the E3 platform of the MG4 Urban and adopt its cabin design. This model represents the second generation of the MG4, which has been on sale in China since September 2025. The front-wheel-drive vehicle is equipped with a new cell-to-body battery (41.9 kWh or 52.8 kWh), which is directly integrated into the body structure. With a starting price of £23,495, the MG4 Urban is currently one of the most affordable battery-electric vehicles in the UK.

Recently, the MG4 Urban has also become available to order in Austria for under €20,000. It remains unclear whether and when the MG4 Urban will be offered in Germany. A dual-model strategy, as seen in the UK with two MG4 ranges, is possible but unconfirmed. In Germany, the ‘old’ MG4 Electric with a 49 kWh battery is currently priced from €34,990.

If this car is anything like MG's other EV offering it's going to go down a storm. After initial skepticism I am now totally sold on MG and SIAC for the future.
