Norway reaches one million electric vehicles in fleet

Norway has recorded exceptionally high electric vehicle registration figures for years, a trend now reflected in the national vehicle parc. Counting battery-electric passenger cars and vans combined, the Scandinavian country has surpassed the milestone of one million all-electric vehicles on its roads.

According to the latest figures from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen), Norway’s electric vehicle fleet comprises 951,300 battery-electric passenger cars and 50,300 battery-electric light commercial vehicles. Battery-electric models account for 32.4 per cent of all passenger cars in circulation and 9.7 per cent of light commercial vehicles. The upward trajectory continues: in February 2026, battery-electric vehicles achieved a market share of 98 per cent of new registrations.

In total, around 2.94 million passenger cars and 519,000 light commercial vehicles are registered in Norway. This means roughly one in three passenger cars in the country is battery-electric, while nearly one in ten light commercial vehicles is powered purely by electricity.

By European comparison, these proportions are exceptional. In Germany, for example, the milestone of two million battery-electric passenger cars – excluding light commercial vehicles – was only reached at the turn of the year. However, this corresponds to just around four per cent of the overall passenger car fleet in Europe’s largest automotive market.

“This demonstrates what is possible when policymakers provide planning certainty and enable people to drive emission-free,” commented Christina Bu, Secretary General of the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association.

Bu emphasised that the pace must be accelerated, particularly for light commercial vehicles. “One million cars is an impressive number, but we are still far from our goal. There are still significantly more vehicles with internal combustion engines on the roads. The aim is to replace all of these with zero-emission vehicles.”

There are also notable regional differences within Norway. The share of electric vehicles is significantly lower in rural areas than in and around the major urban centres. Oslo records the highest proportion, with battery-electric vehicles accounting for 48.9 per cent of its passenger car fleet. Local industry observers expect the capital to exceed the 50 per cent mark before the summer.

Akershus follows with a share of 40.2 per cent, while Vestland stands at 38.9 per cent. In contrast, more rural counties show significantly lower levels of electrification. Innlandet and Finnmark trail with electric vehicle shares of 19.5 per cent and 12.2 per cent of their respective fleets.
