Islington Council secures £1m funding for EV charging

The London Borough of Islington has secured £932,500 of government funding to increase the number of EV charging points in the area. The council said this is being supported by 'significant' private investment.

The council plans to install ‘at least’ 840 new charge points, which are split into two categories: 600 lamp column charging points rated at 5kW, and 240 charge points rated at 7kW. This will drastically expand the availability of overnight AC charging for EV owners in homes without off-street parking, and move Islington closer to achieving the council’s goal of 1400 on-street charging points by 2030.

There’s no word on who will deliver or operate the new chargers; in a statement, Islington Council merely said that ‘procurement development strategies for the new infrastructure are currently being developed and are expected to be submitted for decision in spring 2026’. In 2025, Compleo UK won a tender to install 500 chargers in Islington, although this doesn’t suggest that Compleo will be selected as the charge point operator.

Cllr Rowena Champion, Islington’s Executive Member for Environment, Air Quality and Transport, said the funding from the Department for Transport will provide a ‘significant boost’ to its efforts to ‘help local people adopt more environmentally friendly ways of travel’.

Champion said: “Islington council has delivered more than 600 publicly accessible charge points and has plans to deliver more in the coming months and years. By making sure we have the infrastructure in place for electric vehicles, we can encourage drivers to make the switch to more environmentally friendly forms of transport, which helps improve air quality across the borough and delivers a huge range of health and wellbeing benefits including a lower risk of developing respiratory illness.”
