Essex secures £8.3m in LEVI funding for EV charger rollout

Essex County Council has been awarded £8 million in UK government funding to support the rollout of EV charging infrastructure across the county. The investment will support a partnership between the council and private charge point operators (CPO).

The money is coming from the UK government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) scheme, and is in fact the second largest allocation to a UK council by the scheme so far.

Essex County Council says it will help deliver as many as 5000 charging points in public places by 2031, with work set to start in this summer – predominantly in on-street locations and public car parks across Essex. The Council states that charging remains a challenge for residents without off-street parking, and so it will be focusing its efforts on supporting these residents.

The new funding allocation coincides with the completion of a separate programme earlier this month, which saw 62 public EV charging points open in Basildon, Brentwood, Colchester, Harlow and others. It sits alongside the Electrifying Essex campaign, which aims to promote EV adoption and the county’s charging network among Essex residents.

Councillor Dan Land, Deputy Cabinet Member for Highways, Infrastructure and Sustainable Transport, said: “A growing number of people in Essex have already switched to an electric vehicle and are enjoying up to £1,400 in savings per year from fuel and maintenance costs. We want to support more of our residents to reap the benefits.

“Installing more public charging points can be vital for people without access to home charging. It also provides convenient access for drivers to charge their vehicles when they’re away from home or on a longer journey.”
