Prague to roll out 150 ‘EV-ready’ street lamps for charging network

The Prague City Council has approved a project to renew public lighting as part of the e-mobility strategy. In collaboration with the municipal company Technologie hl. m. Prahy, around 150 'EV-ready' streetlights are to be created this year to facilitate the future expansion of charging infrastructure.

Under the mid-range scenario of the city’s general development plan for charging infrastructure, Prague could see up to 180,000 electric vehicles on its roads by 2030. To meet this charging demand, the report estimates that around 4,500 charging stations will be required.

To boost the number of charging stations, the city council proposes utilising the modernised public lighting network. For this purpose, Prague plans to invest approximately 100 million Czech koruna, equivalent to around €4.1 million.

This initiative involves a collaborative project between the City of Prague, represented by Technologie hl. m. Prahy (THMP), and the energy provider PREdistribuce. Together, they will develop EV-ready street lamps (EVR) designed to accommodate electric vehicle charging stations in the future with minimal financial, technological, or time-related barriers. The locations for these EVR lamps are being selected to align with upgrades to the existing power grid, maximising cost savings during the construction of charging facilities. Initially, 150 EVR lamps are set to be installed this year.
