Will Fiat Chrysler use Tesla technology?

It is looking like Fiat Chrysler might buy the use of a Tesla technology for its brands’ electric cars. During a conversation with stock analysts, FCA boss Mike Manley revealed that his company was considering this option. It would not be the first partnership between the two companies.

Umicore to supply Samsung SDI with NMC

Umicore and Samsung SDI have signed a strategic agreement to supply nearly 80,000 tonnes of NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) cathode material from 2020. The supply will come from Umicore plants in various regions, most of them initially from Korea.

Daimler partners with Sila Nano on batteries

Daimler has acquired a minority stake in the Californian battery materials specialist Sila Nanotechnologies, with which BMW already cooperates. The company completely replaces conventional graphite electrodes with silicon-dominated composites.

Innolith battery said to achieve 4 x energy density

Swiss energy technology company Innolith says they have developed the world’s first lithium-based rechargeable battery with an energy density of 1000 Wh/kg, which would give electric cars a range of more than 1000 km on a single charge. The battery apparently uses less expensive materials and is non-flammable.

According to a recent survey in China, nearly 70 per cent of respondents said they regretted buying a new-energy vehicle (NEV). Batteries are the most common customer complaint: Problems range from draining too fast, to running dangerously hot, others do not perform as advertised. Around 40 NEVs spontaneously combusted in China last year.

The VW Group and Sweden’s Gigafactory mastermind Northvolt want to advance battery cell production in Europe together and are forming a consortium called the European Battery Union (EBU). It includes partners from research and industry from seven EU member states.

Six Consortia want to build battery cells in Germany

Six consortia have so far submitted applications for funding to set up battery cell production in Germany. These include prominent names such as BASF, VW, PSA, BMW and Northvolt. Meanwhile e.Go-Mobile CEO Günther Schuh is leaving the consortium that wants to bring a cell factory to Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia region.

Tesla in negotiation with CATL for battery cells

Tesla appears to be negotiating with Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) to supply battery cells for its Model 3, manufactured in Shanghai, China. The talks between Tesla and CATL have been concerning the required specifications for the cells. The battery cell manufacturer has since denied intentions of entering business with Tesla.
