CATL puts Yibin 15-GWh-plant section into operation

CATL has completed the first expansion stage of its battery cell plant in the city of Yibin in southwest China’s Sichuan Province, for which it has already commissioned the equipment. The company puts the annual capacity of the completed section at 15 GWh.

QuantumScape considers cell production in Salzgitter

QuantumScape could produce solid-state batteries in the German city of Salzgitter with Volkswagen in the future. According to an agreement between the two companies, the location for the planned pilot plant with VW is to be determined this year.

BMW orders cobalt from Morocco for €100M

The BMW Group has signed a supply contract with the Moroccan mining company Managem Group for cobalt for use in battery cells worth around 100 million euros. According to the German carmaker, this five-year contract covers around one-fifth of the cobalt requirements.

Innolith battery said to achieve 4 x energy density

Swiss energy technology company Innolith says they have developed the world’s first lithium-based rechargeable battery with an energy density of 1000 Wh/kg, which would give electric cars a range of more than 1000 km on a single charge. The battery apparently uses less expensive materials and is non-flammable.

Tesla in negotiation with CATL for battery cells

Tesla appears to be negotiating with Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) to supply battery cells for its Model 3, manufactured in Shanghai, China. The talks between Tesla and CATL have been concerning the required specifications for the cells. The battery cell manufacturer has since denied intentions of entering business with Tesla.
