Electric copycats.

Shanghai is also a place to see the latest “adaptations” by Chinese manufacturers of rather well-known models. Take the Changan Raeton CC which is undoubtedly inspired by Tesla. The Suzhou Eagle appears to have taken the best of luxury when crossing a Ferrari and a Porsche. At least, they do not copy the love of SUVs and strong motors from the west.

2015 Volt production to end: In the lights of the upcoming next-gen Volt, Chevrolet is to discontinue production of the current model next month. There is plenty of inventory left while sales have dwindled lately. By the end of summer, the new Chevy Volt will roll off the lines after retooling of the plant. Since the introduction of the Volt in 2007, GM has sold 70,000 units – far less than expected.

Electric coupé tease: Chinese Changan Auto issued a first image of an all-electric coupé that is to be unveiled at the Auto Shanghai, starting on April, 20. Driven by a 123-kW electric engine, the company says the shiny EV can go from 0 – 60 mph in 4.12 seconds.

No electric Scion soon: Toyota’s small car subsidiary will not go electric or hybrid anytime soon. Scion CEO Doug Murtha claims that while Scion’s target audience is indeed interested in environmentally-friendly technology, the under 35 year olds are not willing to pay a surcharge for electrification.

EV subsidies in India: The Indian government started a new programme called ‘FAME India’ (for: Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles in India). As part of the national electric mobility plan, the scheme reserves 8 billion rupees (125m dollars) until the end of 2017. 5bn rupees (80m USD) will be spend on subsidies designed to lower prices and to be paid to manufacturers.

No new Spark EV: Even though an updated version of the Chevy Spark will be presented in April, its electric counterpart will not be renewed, GM told Inside EVs. The current Spark EV will remain in the lineup, probably until the arrival of the Bolt EV in 2017. Insiders told electrive.com that a pre-series companion model of the Bolt EV for GM’s Opel subsidiary in Europe will be tested already this year.

Tesla news: The Californians now announced to expand their Resale Value Guarantee to all 11 European markets where the Model S is sold. Also, anyone looking to buy a Model S can now expect delivery after only 20 days, at least if one is willing to spend at least 105,000 dollars on the AWD version.

Changan electrification: Chinese carmaker Changan plans to spend 18 billion yuan (2.93 billion dollars) on R&D, marketing, and supply chains. Its goal is to launch 34 new models, 27 of which will be purely electric and another seven hybrids, over the next ten years. The company is looking to sell a total of 400,000 vehicles by 2020 and 2 million vehicles by 2025.

Electric Jag from Austria? Jaguar Land Rover may build its first electric car in Austria as soon as next year. Some 10,000 units per year could roll of the production line. British Autocar recently reported that the F-Pace will be electrified and that the same platform could be used for an all-electric Land Rover.

Tesla layoffs in China: Tesla confirmed that it will cut a number of jobs in China since sales are significantly lower than expected. According to Chinese media, Tesla will eliminate 180 of the 600 positions at its China unit. Local executives including Veronica Wu, Tesla’s former China president, and June Jin, Tesla’s former vice president of communications, have recently left the company.

New EVs for China: Dongfeng has launched its electric mini car E30 as a two- and four-seater (E30L) in China, while Changan brings its electric sedan Eado EV to the Chinese market. Changan has ambitious plans as it wants to introduce a total of 27 all-electric models in China by 2025.

BYD E5 spotted: It is BYD’s second all-electric car, following its e6 model. The EV will be unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show in April and launch in the second half of the year. Range will be about 200 kilometers and prices including subsidies are expected to start at around 140,000 yuan (22,344 USD)

BYD takes on Korea: The Chinese manufacturer wants to introduce its all-electric buses and taxis in South Korea this year. According to BYD, it sold 3,560 e6 taxis and 2,500 K9 buses worldwide in 2014.

Two Audi EVs announced: The German carmaker will launch an all-electric sports car and an all-electric sports activity vehicle (SAV) with more than 500 km (310 miles) range by 2018, Audi CEO Rupert Stadler told German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ). Furthermore, Stadler confirmed the brand’s plan to issue one plug-in hybrid model each year.

New EV for China: Chinese carmaker Changan will launch the Eado EV on its home market this month. The all-electric sedan is powered by an electric motor with 88 kW and comes with a range of up to 160 km (100 miles). Starting price is around 200,000 yuan (32,140 dollars) including all subsidies.

Outlander PHEV with V2H: In Japan, the plug-in hybrid SUV can now be used to supply electricity to homes. The approval usually granted to all-electric vehicles only has become possible as the Outlander’s engine does not run while the vehicle is connected to a V2H system.

GM faces lawsuit: GM is facing a proposed defective automotive class action lawsuit over an alleged defect in the steering system of its Chevrolet Volt which causes the steering wheel to freeze intermittently while driving. The lawsuit claims that GM was aware of the problem, but continued to sell the cars.

Heavy cartel: Top European truckmakers such as Daimler, Iveco, Scania, Volvo and MAN have operated a cartel for 14 years to delay the progress of emissions-reducing technology, the Financial Times reported citing leaked documents in a European Commission investigation.

VW-Golf-PlugInMeet the Golf GTE: Volkswagen has baptised its first plug-in hybrid. The Golf GTE is scheduled for mid-2014 and is one of the steps towards VW’s aim to become market leader in the electric car segment by 2018. The company has announced to emphasise its electric endeavours in March at its “electrified” event for investors, press and public. For two weeks the former Berlin Tempelhof airfield will become a hub of information on e-mobility made by Volkswagen, including test riding opportunities.

Smartest, smallest, cheapest and the only convertible e-car available in the U.S. Reasons enough for John Voelcker to take the latest version of the Smart ED for a test-ride. He found the drive of the heavier car to be “far smoother” compared to gasoline models and better to handle, too. Only the interior Voelcker rated as “seriously outdated.”

New hybrid for China: Changan Motors will launch its Eado Hybrid to their home market by February. The sedan for 130,000 yuan (21,500 dollars) is positioned against BYD’s Qin, which retails from 180,000 yuan (30,000 dollars).

Luxury leasing: GM released lease prices for the Cadillac ELR. They start at 699 dollars per month with a 6,000 dollar deposit and 39-month leasing term. Miles are limited to 32,500 during the lease period, which breaks down to 10,000 miles per year. While BMW has not confirmed a final price for leasing its i3, a customer received a quote of 930 dollars, with a cap at 12,000 miles a year. Tesla Model S’ lease prices range from 1,100 to 1,250 dollars per month.

Renault Twizy re-reviewed: Nikki-Gordon Bloomfield was one of the first to jump on the Twizy-bandwagon but soon discovered it was not a car she “could live with everyday.” However, she has not given up on the Twizy entirely and now found a better use for the little racer: “weekend jollies in the countryside.”
