Avatr follows up with the Avatr 06 electric mid-size sedan

The Avatr brand from Changan, CATL and Huawei has unveiled its Avatr 06 mid-size sedan. It is technically related to the recently unveiled Avatr 07 crossover and, like the latter, will be launched on the Chinese market as a purely electric car and as a hybrid with range extender.

The Avatr 06 is the brand’s fourth model after the Avatr 07 crossover, the Avatr 11 SUV and the coupé-like Avatr 12 sedan. According to Car News China, the new family member, which like all the others is also based on the CHN platform from Changan, Huawei and CATL, is set to be launched on the market in early 2025 as a BEV and EREV. Avatr is therefore remaining true to its new strategy: in future, the Chinese manufacturer will no longer be focussing exclusively on purely electric cars, but will be providing them with hybrid drives with range extenders.

The Avatr 06 measures 4.86 x 1.96 x 1.45 metres with a wheelbase of 2.94 metres. This makes it similar in size to the Avatr 07 – only it is much flatter due to its body shape. The wheelbase is identical for both models. The manufacturer has not yet publicised the technical data for the four-door model. According to Car News China, however, there is much to suggest that the 06 shares the technology with the 07. This offers four drive options (three BEVs, one EREV) with a power range between 252 kW (RWD) and 440 kW (4WD) and, in the case of the BEV variants, houses a Shenxing battery with a capacity of 82.16 kWh – CATL’s new LFP battery, which was launched in August 2023 and should be able to charge from 0 to 80 per cent in 20 minutes. The range according to CLTC is 650 km for the rear-wheel drive version and 610 km for the all-wheel drive version.

Whether the values can actually be transferred one-to-one to the Avatr 06 will become clear at the market launch. This is scheduled for early 2025. As Car News China writes, the model should actually be available in the fourth quarter of this year in order to boost sales figures. With 45,445 vehicles sold between January and November, Avatr has so far achieved less than 50 per cent of its target sales for 2024.

Avatr is a joint venture between the state-owned car manufacturer Changan and the battery manufacturer CATL. Changan holds 40 per cent of the shares, CATL 17 per cent. The rest is owned by local investment funds. Huawei is also on board as a technology partner and main supplier of components. Incidentally, the Avatr brand was originally founded by Changan and Nio in 2018, at the time under the name ‘Changan Nio’. However, development was bumpy and Nio later pulled out of the joint venture.
