Autonomous fleets: VW teams up with Aurora

Volkswagen enters into a strategic partnership with Aurora, an U.S. start-up founded by Google’s long-time car guru Chris Urmson and former Tesla manager Sterling Anderson. Both partners seek to bring autonomous EVs to cities as Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) fleets.

Toshiyuki-Mizushima“The core technology of plug-in hybrids and electric and fuel-cell vehicles is based on hybrid technology. By increasing our hybrid team, we can leverage new developments for use in electric powertrains.”

Toshiyuki Mizushima, president of Toyota’s powertrain division, explains why the Japanese carmaker is working on expanding the development of its gasoline-hybrid technology, as well as increase the team working on it by 30 percent.

Ian-Callum“I believe electric cars are here for the next 100 years and will eventually replace the combustion engine.”

Jaguar Design Director Ian Callum says that with the I-Pace, the British carmaker opened another chapter in its history. He didn’t say, however, what he thinks will come after the electric car.

Johann-Jungwirth“I am big fan of electric mobility. When I was still working at Apple, I was already driving electric vehicles. For me, there is no way back.”

Johann Jungwirth, VW’s Chief Digital Officer, is certain that especially following the diesel scandal, the German carmaker is open to new and innovative ideas. That includes electric mobility, as well as self-driving technology.
