Anne Smart, Lance Bradley.

Anne-Smart“This is a business plan allowing the largest automaker in the world to inject itself in California’s EV charging market and profit from its wrongdoing.”

Anne Smart, ChargePoint’s VP of public policy, on Volkswagen’s penalty to install EV charging in California. Other than being a competitor, Smart has a point as VW’s subsidiary Electrify America is allowed to profit from charging fees. While the plans still have to be approved by CARB and EPA, the first draft already lacks in infrastructure for disadvantaged communities.

Lance-Bradley“It’s poorly thought through. It’s not very difficult to have an EV policy, but the new VED charging is muddled.”

Mitsubishi UK boss Lance Bradley has accused the UK government of not having “a clear and consistent plan” for EVs, especially when it comes to the new Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) that places the Outlander PHEV on par with a Range Rover SDV8.

Klaus Fröhlich, Peter Hochholdinger, Lance Bradley.

Klaus-Froehlich“BMW will enter the fuel cell market early in the next decade, starting with very small production runs.”

BMW’s head of development Klaus Fröhlich gave only a rough estimate as the when the carmaker will focus on fuel cells. Though it won’t be before 2025, as costs are still too high and there is not enough infrastructure for market penetration.

Peter-Hochholdinger“The cars we build are about seven years beyond everything I’ve seen before, and it’s quite thrilling and exciting to be here and to be part of this car manufacturing group.”

Peter Hochholdinger, Tesla’s VP of Vehicle Production, is sure to have gotten his former employer to listen up. He had changed from Audi to Tesla a few months ago.

Lance-Bradley“Hopefully, sales will creep back up, and it’s a shame because the market is not established yet – it probably could have been done with another 12 months.”

Mitsubishi’s UK managing director Lance Bradley says that with the government grant cut in the UK in March and Brexit making it more expensive to import cars, it is becoming more difficult to sell the Outlander PHEV on the Isles.

Lance Bradley, Heath Walker, Autumn Burke.

Lance-Bradley“If we let individual companies do their own thing you end up with a pricing programme so poorly thought out that it could potentially effect the sales of electric vehicles.”

Mitsubishi UK managing director Lance Bradley again criticises Ecotricity’s payment model for fast-chargers along motorways that he says discriminates against PHEV drivers. He wants an infrastructure plan, so providers cannot determine their own pricing.

anonym“Ideally we want to see superchargers across Australia – that’s our ultimate goal. We’ll go where the market is.”

Heath Walker, Marketing and Communications Manager for Tesla Australia, says Tesla wants to connect Melbourne and Sydney in terms of Superchargers by the end of the year. An important move, especially as the Model X will go on sale their next week.

Autumn-Burke_100x100px“Governor Jerry Brown has set an ambitious goal of 1.5 million electric vehicles by 2025, but unless we take action, the state won’t come close to meeting this goal.”

Autumn Burke from the California State Assembly says there is bill on the table, according to which 15 percent of all vehicles sold in California would have to be emission free by 2025. ZEV credits won’t count.

Rupert Stadler, Ahn Byung-ki, Lance Bradley.

rupert-stadler“We will introduce a growing and electrically driven product portfolio from 2018.”

Audi CEO Rupert Stadler comments on the in-house masterplan that continues to be more and more electrified. At the current rate, a quarter of Audi’s offering could have an electric motor on board by 2025.

Byung-Ki-Ahn“Electrical vehicles are changing real fast. From a conventional perspective, two years or maybe a year-and-a-half is not really a long time. But in the EV business, it is a pretty long time. We have to be ready for the new generation every two years.”

Ahn Byung-ki, director of eco-vehicle development at Hyundai Motor Group, says that technology is advancing so fast that they must introduce new EVs every two years to push range and to keep up with recent Chinese start-ups looking to launch electric supercars.

Lance-Bradley“A fee is understandable. 5 pounds for 20 mins isn’t.”

Mitsubishi UK’s managing director Lance Bradley criticises Ecotricity for demanding such a high price at its fast-chargers along British motorways (we reported). Until recently, plugging in had even been free of charge.

Takahiro Hachigo, Richard Howard, Lance Bradley.

Takahiro-Hachigo“We think hydrogen, which is CO2-free, is the ultimate technology we should pursue.”

Honda is one of the few automakers putting hydrogen cars on the road, and CEO Takahiro Hachigo makes it clear that when it comes to infrastructure and hydrogen storage, it cannot do it alone. He predicts that the technology will be mass-market ready within ten years.

Richard-Howard“Instead of increasing diesel fuel duty or banning diesels from city centres, the government should look to increase taxes on new diesel cars and offer scrappage grants to take old polluting diesels off the road.”

Richard Howard is head of environment and energy of British think tank Policy Exchange, which called for a rise in road tax for new diesel cars in the UK. Existing diesel drivers should be exempt, as they bought their cars thinking they were doing the environment a favour – they in turn could benefit from a scrappage scheme.

Lance-Bradley“We never expected the grant to last forever, we just asked for a phased removal, and while this change has come quicker than we hoped, we expect to maintain momentum.”

Mitsubishi UK boss Lance Bradley is confident Outlander PHEV sales won’t suffer a long-term drop. Though government incentives will decrease by half this month, he expects buyers will continue to see the car’s advantages and be willing to pay the extra initial cost.

Mark Reuss, Lance Bradley.

Mark-Reuss“We make cars, we know how to make cars. They’ve got great technical capabilities. We are very interested in how those two might work together.”

GM’s Product Development Chief Mark Reuss suddenly shows an interest in working with Google. It seems as if someone is very keen on getting a better grip on automated driving technology.

Lance-Bradley“Mitsubishi’s plan globally is to have at least 20% of its volume being either EV or plug-in-hybrid by 2020.”

Lance Bradley, Mitsubishi UK managing director, is certain that with the Outlander PHEV selling so well and the hybrid ASX in the pipeline, that target might well be achieved.

Kiyotaka Ise, Fikri Işık, Lance Bradley.

Kiyotaka-Ise“You may think 35 years is a long time. But for an automaker to envision all combustion engines as gone is pretty extraordinary.”

Toyota-Manager Kiyotaka Ise underlines the (r)evolutionary nature of the company’s sustainability strategy that will basically eliminate combustion engines from Toyota’s line-up by 2050 and also includes green production.

Fikri Isik“No car is 100 percent original.”

Fikri Işık, Turkish Minister for Science and Technology, rejects the reproach the presented prototypes of the “National Car” would too strongly resemble a Cadillac (we reported yesterday).

Lance-Bradley“The PHEV changed everything for us. Suddenly we were being taken seriously in the fleet market, dealers could justify more investment in the brand and found they were selling more of the other models as well.”

Lance Bradley, Managing Director at Mitsubishi Motors UK, is truly convinced by the Outlander PHEV that has led to a revival of the Japanese brand. About 10,000 hybrid Mitsubishi are sold by the importer in Britain each year.
