Pam-Fletcher“Until Paris, we had told the world the Opel Ampera-e had 250 miles. Renault matched that number. Then we kicked that number’s ass with 310 miles. They didn’t shoot high enough.”

GM’s head of EV development Pam Fletcher gloats that they were able to trick other carmakers from taking the crown for the first affordable long-range EV. But the 400-km Renault Zoe did beat the Ampera-e to the showrooms, as it can already be ordered.

Oliver-Krischer“If the Paris agreement to curb climate-warming emissions is to be taken seriously, no new combustion engine cars should be allowed on roads after 2030.”

German Green Party lawmaker Oliver Krischer comments on a resolution passed by the German Federal Assembly to ban all diesel- and petrol-powered cars on German and European roads from 2030 (we reported).

Tobias-Moers“There is no plan for 2020 to have an electrified car, but if you ask me that question you will always get the answer that sooner or later there will be a pure electric driven AMG, because that’s going to happen.”

Mercedes-AMG chairman Tobias Moers says he hasn’t ruled out an all-electric series production performance model. After all, the limited SLS Electric Drive did quite well back in 2014.

Pam Fletcher, Pasquale Romano, Freeman Shen.

Pam-Fletcher“Charge times are never short enough, but if you look at the way people use the cars, even in the shared space, the charge times do not become so onerous.”

Pam Fletcher, GM’s leading electric-vehicle engineer, says that even though the Bolt still needs 90 minutes to fast-charge, the number of times the battery will actually be at 0 percent will be rare and drivers can also plan to charge on their fixed routes.

Pasquale-Romano“It won’t be long before drivers start suffering from ‘gas anxiety’, not range anxiety.”

ChargePoint CEO Pasquale Romano says the growing network of EV charging stations will cure range anxiety for EV drivers. He also hopes that a rise in petrol prices will reverse the current trend and push people away from combustion engines to electric alternatives.

Freeman-Shen“I don’t think traditional car companies are doing well selling cars, especially with their customer experience. With smart, connected cars, I believe I can change that.”

While Freeman Shen, founder and CEO of Chinese start-up WM Motor, himself didn’t want to go into detail, insiders say that he looking to sell cars mostly online and only set up a limited number of actual showrooms.

Herbert Diess, Pam Fletcher, Elon Musk.

Herbert-Diess“If there ever was a chance for outsiders to enter the automotive industry, than that chance is now.”

Volkswagen’s brand chief Herbert Diess reminds established players not to take potential competitors lightly. He specifically referred to Apple and other start-ups that only have to think about EVs out loud to find “billions” in funding.

Pam-Fletcher“The Bolt EV is really a purpose-built car for the sharing economy. That’s a completely different story than ‘Where are gas prices at?’ Forget it. That’s not the conversation anymore.”

Pam Fletcher, EV chief engineer at GM, makes it clear that the manufacturer is aiming at the masses. It recently invested in ridesharing company Lyft to set up an autonomous part of the latter’s fleet, featuring the new Chevy Bolt.

Elon-Musk-Twitter“It will meet you wherever your phone is and it will just automatically charge itself along the entire journey.”

Tesla CEO Elon Musk says the new “summon” function of the Autopilot will probably be optimised 2018. By then, EV owners will not have to wait for their car to exit or enter the garage, but can call to and from wherever they wish.

Pam Fletcher, Andy Palmer, Hervé Muller.

Pam-Fletcher“It’s a really a terrific story for technology and manufacturing and electrification in this country.”

Pam Fletcher, chief executive engineer for EVs at GM, backs the tale of the Bolt as an inclusive and now even patriotic electric vehicle and points out that production facilities for cars like the Volt and electric motors are located in Michigan.

Andy-Palmer-Nissan“I think something like an electric car would be interesting, to sit squarely above a Tesla. Most people who buy Teslas are buying fully loaded ones, so it implies there’s room for that.”

Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer, who has plenty of experience in introducing EVs, considers doing the same for the British brand. Aston is currently overhauling its line up that will also include a hybrid. Furthermore, Palmer mentioned a prototype “running around” that looks like a “1,000bhp Rapide.”

Herve-Muller“We see this as an expansion of public transit and Indianapolis has an active downtown that doesn’t close down after 5 p.m, like some cities.”

Hervé Muller, president of BlueIndy, here states one reason why Bolloré chose Indianapolis to set up electric car sharing. The city (or its mayor) was more than willing and despite financing problems, Bolloré says it is in for the long run.

Pam Fletcher, Hetel Shah, Aslak Fyhri.

Pam-Fletcher“The Volt has been the best-selling plug-in vehicle in America. We have displaced more than 34 million gallons of gasoline as a result of our current generation Volt owners traveling more than 650 million all-electric miles. That’s pretty remarkable.”

Pam Fletcher, Executive Chief Engineer for 2016 Chevrolet Volt, hints that the company will not stop there and that it is “committed to delivering exciting, affordable and game-changing electric vehicles like the Chevrolet Bolt in the next several years.”

GoUltraLow“The balance of costs and benefits are unique to electric vehicles and therefore it is important that Go Ultra Low promotes the advantages of ownership and the financial savings they can deliver on operating budgets to fleet decision makers.”

Hetel Shah, head of Go Ultra Low, is urging fleet decision-makers to use wholelife cost calculations when choosing vehicles for their fleet.

Aslak-Fyhri“The effect of having an electric bike was particularly strong among women. They did far more trips with their e-bikes than men did. Men, on the other hand, often went for longer trips once they were out cycling.”

Researcher Aslak Fyhri from the Institute of Transport Economics says that the above mentioned analysis is the first controlled experimental study of people’s actual use of electric bikes.

Pam Fletcher, Max Warburton.

Pam-Fletcher“If you’re driving through the mountains, we don’t want you to be crawling up grades, or to be limited on any terrain.”

According to Pam Fletcher, chief engineer for EVs at GM, this is one reason why the Chevrolet Volt comes with a four-cylinder range extender and not with a two-cylinder engine like the BMW i3 has.

Max-Warburton“Tesla is selling cars to emotional buyers who are comparing the Tesla S to other emotional, irrational and expensive products – such as the Mercedes S class and Maserati. That’s the genius of the product – consumers are not doing any cost/benefit calculations – but rather just saying ‘I want one’.”

Max Warburton, analyst with Bernstein Research, sees the key to Tesla’s success in the positioning at the high end of the market rather than in technology or costs.
