2015 Volt production to end: In the lights of the upcoming next-gen Volt, Chevrolet is to discontinue production of the current model next month. There is plenty of inventory left while sales have dwindled lately. By the end of summer, the new Chevy Volt will roll off the lines after retooling of the plant. Since the introduction of the Volt in 2007, GM has sold 70,000 units – far less than expected.

Electric coupé tease: Chinese Changan Auto issued a first image of an all-electric coupé that is to be unveiled at the Auto Shanghai, starting on April, 20. Driven by a 123-kW electric engine, the company says the shiny EV can go from 0 – 60 mph in 4.12 seconds.

No electric Scion soon: Toyota’s small car subsidiary will not go electric or hybrid anytime soon. Scion CEO Doug Murtha claims that while Scion’s target audience is indeed interested in environmentally-friendly technology, the under 35 year olds are not willing to pay a surcharge for electrification.

EV subsidies in India: The Indian government started a new programme called ‘FAME India’ (for: Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles in India). As part of the national electric mobility plan, the scheme reserves 8 billion rupees (125m dollars) until the end of 2017. 5bn rupees (80m USD) will be spend on subsidies designed to lower prices and to be paid to manufacturers.

Polaris buys Brammo’s motorcycle business: The investment will allow Brammo to focus solely on designing, developing and integrating electric drivetrains. Polaris’ will help market vehicles using Brammo technology and utilize the assets acquired to manufacture electric motorcycles later this year.

Gigafactory update: Recent construction permits for Tesla’s battery plant in Nevada reveal that just laying foundation will cost some 16 million dollars and the first phase of structural steel construction another 15 million. The total cost of the project is estimated at 5 billion dollars. Right next door, the company Switch will build what will be the world’s largest data centre.

Toyota recall: In the U.S., the carmaker is calling back 5,000 Prius V from model years 2014 and 2015 due to possible issues with the Occupant Classification System (OCS). The system is responsible for activating and deactivating the passenger seat air bag and may not have been calibrated correctly.
