Seat coming to China with VW gearing up for growth

Volkswagen’s Spanish subsidiary Seat will enter China by hooking onto the JAC Volkswagen joint venture. Together the three plan to establish a R&D centre for electric vehicles. Development is to culminate in a dedicated electric car platform for China and beyond in 2021.

Dieter Manz, CEO of engineering firm Manz, is urging the German automobile industry to make its own batteries as otherwise nothing but dependance from imports awaits. However, some might say that it is already a little too late to recover the gap.

This is Apple CEO Tim Cook pushing the rumour mill around the iCar, while raising pressure on established carmakers. Yet, he did not say anything a little more concrete.

ZF CEO Stefan Sommer underlines the importance of electrification at the occassion of the company’s centenary, but also warns that the electric revolution will take time and some more hybridisation.

thomas-weber“We stay committed to fuel cells. Nobody knows if today’s type of battery EV will pay off in the end—the cars are OK but not the infrastructure.”

Thomas Weber, Daimler’s head of development, makes us wonder what he knows about hydrogen infrastructure that we don’t. In any case, Daimler is spending about 50 percent of its R&D budget on cutting CO2 emission, regardless which technology does the job.
