Plug-in fuel cell bus: The ‘Hawaii Center for Advanced Transportation Technologies’ (HCATT) has ordered the ‘H2Ride Fuel Cell Plug-In Shuttle Bus,’ developed by Californian US Hybrid Corporation. It is set to be operated by the County of Hawaii Mass Transit Agency’s (MTA). Apparently, its 28 kWh batteries can be recharged via the grid only.

DOE funds more battery research: The U.S. Department of Energy will supply funds to six applied battery research (ABR) projects as part of its Vehicle Technologies portfolio. The goal is to develop Li-ion cells with an energy density of more than 200 Wh/kg for 40-mile-range PHEVs and EVs.

Electric 4-wheel drive: EVDrive completed the development of its so-called Terra-Torque-Drive designed specifically for utility terrain vehicles (UTV). For demonstration EVDrive chose the Kawasaki Teryx4, turning it around on the spot. Each of the four motors can deliver a peak torque of 89 Nm and features regen braking.

US Hybrid adds H2: Specialised in electric and hybrid powertrain components for mid to heavy duty vehicles, US Hybrid now signed a global licensing agreement with United Technologies Corporation (UTC). The aim is to commercialise UTC’s Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell technologies and to use it in H2 transit buses.

Open source vehicle design: Local Motors is a crowd-funding platform specialising in vehicle design by users. The first design to be funded is the Ariel Cruiser by Romanian member Ianis Vasilatos. The Ariel is a retro hybrid somewhere between a bicycle and a motorbike and comes in an electric and a gasoline version.
