US Hybrid starts production of electric street sweepers

Ideanomics has announced that production has started for 18 hybrid-electric street sweepers featuring its subsidiary US Hybrid’s electric and hybrid electric propulsion kits.

In the next steps, the California-based Global Environmental Products (GEP) will manufacture and deliver the sweepers to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) in the coming weeks. At the same time, GEP will also manufacture seven additional zero-emission sweepers featuring US Hybrid technology for other customers.

The plan to manufacture hybrid-electric street sweepers had been announced in September last year, with plans to supply the sweepers to New York, California, the City of Helena, Montana, and Washington DC. While the technical specifications were not explicitly mentioned at the time, the manufacturer now explain that if Caltrans electrifies all 160 of its street sweepers, it would save about 14,400 metric tonnes of GHG emissions over its life cycle.

“Together, US Hybrid and GEP are taking action to help cities transition some of the biggest, hardest to decarbonize specialty vehicles – like street sweepers – to zero-emission,” says Macy Neshati, Chief Commercial Office of Ideanomics.  ”We are doing this work right here in California, supporting a new generation of green jobs and developing cutting-edge zero-emission technology.”

This is also not Ideanomics first foray in the area of electrifying commercial utility vehicles, as an electric tractor factory was opened in California in October 2022. Ideanomics also has the area of batteries covered with an investment into the Slovakian battery startup InoBat.
