Patenting progress: While the number of conventional engines stagnates, electric and hybrid engines made for 85 percent of patents filled last year, says the Center of Automotive Management (CAM). About 6,000 of the 13,300 patented innovations are hybrid, another 4,000 electric. Toyota applied for most patents (26%), followed by Honda and GM.
