Volvo supports CCS: Volvo gets behind the Charging Interface Initiative, joining Audi, BMW, Daimler, Opel, Porsche, VW, TÜV Süd, Mennekes and Phoenix Contact in their effort to establish the Combined Charging System (CCS) as a standard. CharIN is working towards EV charging with 200 and up to 350 kW although it is currently operating at 50 kWh, similar to CHAdeMO.

Shanghai stocks up: The Chinese mega city reportedly plans to have 3,000 rental EVs in its vicinity by the end of the year and a government paper now proposes 5,000 new charge points. As many as 20,000 electric cars will be available for hire by Shanghai’s 24m inhabitants by 2020 and could be charged at 30,000 locations.

West Coast electric highway: EV Connect received 1.8m dollars from the California Energy Commission to add charge stops along parts of the California 99 and Interstate 5 highways. The West Coast Electric Highway will include fast- and Level 2 EV charging stations and will connect Canada with Mexico.

BMW is looking for partners to erect solar EV charging ports in South Africa. The plan is to install four stations by the end of the year, two in Johannesburg, as well as one in each Cape Town and Durban. BMW SA also called on the government to scrap its 25 percent tax on EV imports, esp. as gas guzzlers are taxed with 18%.

EV charging in New Zealand: Company Powerco says it will install 20 EV charging stations across the country over the next three years. The first station will go up next week in Tauranga and another one in New Plymouth. Plans there are supported by the district council.
