Mini to become all-electric brand in the U.S.?

BMW may make Mini an all-electric brand in the States. The company is also talking to other carmakers to lower cost of electrifying the compact cars together.

It looks like BMW may follow Daimler in its move to electrify the compact car offering entirely (we reported). With Mini planning to launch an electric model by 2019, Automotive News spoke to the brand’s CEO Peter Schwarzenbauer in Los Angeles. He said the way forward for Mini in the States would be “in the direction of the electric urban mobility company.”

He also revealed, that BMW has reached out to other carmakers as it looks for partners to decrease the cost of electrifying the brand. Schwarzenbauer would not give any details though and deemed allegations of Mini discussing with Great Wall to build its cars in China to be “pure speculation.”
