The Polish city of Stettin has placed an order with Solaris for 16 new hybrid buses. The Solaris Urbino series hybrid buses will come in two different size variety, at 12m and an articulated 18m version, running on a 120 kW and 200 kW traction motor, respectively.

The 12m bus will run on a 157 kW 4.5-liter Cummins ISB, using a 145 kW generator and 120 kW traction motor. The larger 18m articulated version will run using a 157 kW 6.7-liter Cummins diesel, 200 kW generator and 200 kW traction motor. The Polish bus manufacturer has been quite successful in delivering their electric and hybrid buses all across Europe, as well as having found buyers as far away as India.

The Solaris hybrid technology works with minimal use of the diesel engine, as it turns off the combustion motor whenever the vehicle is standing still or the doors are open. Furthermore, intelligent GPS integration enables the vehicle to plan ahead when approaching a bus stop, and to turn off the motor with appropriate timing. Tests have shown the technical integration saves up to 20% of the fuel, that a comparable vehicle would consume.
