Navistar has teamed up with Volkswagen Truck&Bus for their subsidiary IC Bus. The latter now presents the chargE, an all-electric school bus. It will be offered in the USA and can carry a whole load of kids for almost 200 km on one charge.

Navistar’s IC Bus has come up with the chargE concept some time ago and is now ready to present it on a tour across the States. Volkswagen has added the electric drivetrain and batteries. The range of the chargE can exceed 120 miles (193 km), while the powertrain can deliver up to 260 kW.

The electric school bus will be officially launched late next year or in early 2020. Navistar’s alliance with Volkswagen Truck and Bus will also include an electric medium-duty truck for the North American market.

For electric school buses, the chargE by IC Bus brings together multiple concepts and technologies. It includes camera technology, connected systems and remote diagnostics that support vehicle safety, uptime, and more efficient vehicle inspections.

The first stop of the launch tour is at the California Association of School Transportation (CASTO) 50th Annual Meeting in San Diego. The national tour will then stop at trade shows, school visits, and local government events throughout the country, including locations in and around Sacramento, Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles, to provide customers a real impression of the chargE electric school bus by VW and Navistar.
