The US manufacturer Peterbilt has now also begun working on an electric semi truck. They are cooperating with Meritor and TransPower, who will produce fully electric drive systems for two vehicle platforms.

The current plan is a one year test phase with 15 electric trucks, of which 12 are electric semi trucks to haul major loads, and 3 garbage trucks. Technical details to the vehicles themselves have not been released.

The goal of the testing phase is to gather data regarding range, operating hours and charging conditions. The e-trucks are planned to be used in Californian ports, such as Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Diego and Oakland.

The program is financially supported by the California Air Resources Board and a consortium, among whose members include the south Coast Air Quality Management District, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and the San Diego Air Pollution Control District.
