VinBus to launch 3,000 electric buses in Vietnam
A new electric bus company is coming to Vietnam. Set up through the Vietnamese conglomerate VinGroup, the new subsidiary VinBus will start transport services with up to 3,000 e-buses in five major cities from March 2020.
VinBus plans to use up to 3,000 electric buses manufactured by VinFast, another subsidiary of the Group, with investment standing at one trillion VND (over 38 million euros or $43M).
VinFast is already constructing a factory where the first bus is expected to roll off the assembly line before the year’s end. Supply has been secured through Siemens Vietnam for components reportedly, and VinFast further plans to begin manufacturing electric motorcycles, electric vehicles and combustion vehicles in their Haiphong City facility. The batteries for said electric vehicles will be supplied by a joint venture of VinFast and LG Chem.
Besides, the German development service provider EDAG has received an order for the overall development of the first electric vehicle for the Vietnamese market (we reported). Last but not least, VinFast has also agreed with General Motors some time ago to transfer GM’s Vietnam business entirely to VinFast. The startup will distribute GM’s Chevrolet models exclusively in Vietnam.
But back to the latest venture, VinBus – you may expect to see electric buses in the following five cities in Vietnam: Hanoi, Hai Phong, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Can Tho from 2020.
